Plantation shutters offer homeowners distinctive beauty and function that surpasses many other types of window treatments. The versatility and strength of real wood plantation shutters are clear benefits. Depending on the design and material quality used, the insulating plantation shutters help to significantly lower heating and cooling bills. Also, the plantation shutter design affords homeowners a high degree of personal privacy when operators close the shutters and maximum natural lighting when the shutters are fully opened. The benefits are so marked that the shutters become major selling points when homeowners become home sellers. The downside of using plantation shutters is that they are designed as permanent window treatments, and one cannot make many significant window treatment design renovations using draperies.

Interior designers use plantation shutters to brighten rooms or give them a more polished look. The various available hues for plantation shutters also add warmth and coziness to a property. However, the styles and colors of plantation shutters are not the only considerations homeowners carefully regard when having plantation shutters installed in their homes; they usually conduct a type of cost-benefit analysis before they make purchases. By analyzing the cost of materials versus the prices charged by prominent plantation shutter retailers, one can easily see the benefit of do-it-yourself plantation shutters for skilled woodworkers.

Our shutters are gorgeous – exactly what we wanted. I can’t believe how much we saved buying directly from Horizon. The cost of shutters was less than half the price that local merchants quoted for the wood shutters whose brand name starts with “L.” I cannot imagine how “L” shutters could be any better than these. We love them. Every time I called with a question or sent an e-mail, it was answered immediately. Wonderful product, fabulous service. Virginia H. Unbelievable! Definitely worth the shutters price! They look even better than I envisioned!. Heidi J. Not only was the price of shutters lower than local competitors, but the quality blows them away!!! This is my second purchase from you and could not be happier. It took me 20 minutes to install four shutters. If you can use a drill and screwdriver then you can install these in minutes. Paul B. After checking numerous suppliers of shutters both locally and on various web sites, Horizon had the very best shutters price. In fact, I was afraid the quality would be inferior since the price was so much more reasonable. After receiving my shutters, I could not have been more pleased with the quality and appearance, and at such a savings. They look beautiful. Thank you Horizon. Judy C. Both my customers and my sales colleagues agree that your product is one of the best we’ve seen in a long time! Not only is the quality superb but the cost of shutters is definitely competitive. Your customer service department is courteous, knowledgeable and prompt. We have been dealing with another shutter company but with the discovery of your company things have promptly changed! Keep up the good work! Joseph K. (Hamilton Supply Co)

When you go to purchase your plantation shutters, there are three brands that represent the high-, mid-, and low-cost range of what’s available. Which one you choose depends on your budget and your tastes. Hunter-Douglas produces three lines of plantation shutters in both real wood and faux wood styles. A higher-end product, Hunter-Douglas is worth the cost for beauty, quality of workmanship, and customer service. Hampton Bay produces a mid-cost line of shutters as well as other products such as lighting and ceiling fans. The mid-range pricing of Hampton Bay makes them very popular for those who are balancing aesthetics with a budget. HOMEbasics is a low-cost brand for budget-minded DIYers. Available in both faux and real wood, the affordability combines with the visual appeal to make this a very popular choice for plantation shutters. Reviews also describe them as easy to install. Regardless of which line you go with, be sure to ask about frames. Frames can cost extra, but they add an unsurpassed beauty and warmth to a room with plantation shutters.

Plantation shutters are both practical and beautiful additions to a home’s interior. The low maintenance, clean-line window treatments that prominently appeared within the homes of the antebellum American South were part of a style concept originally imported from Spain. The crisp-looking shutters now come in a variety of material choices with some of them providing excellent insulation from extreme temperatures. These casually elegant window treatments give rooms a finished look, which is why they are a favorite of both homeowners and interior designers. However, the number one issue that homeowners have concerning plantation shutters is the price. The retail prices that homeowners pay for plantation shutters depend mainly on material costs, manufacturing labor costs and the percentage of profit chosen by manufacturers.

Large hardware store chains and the many online woodworking tutorials make it possible for do-it-yourself woodworkers to create the classic looking plantation shutters for a fraction of the price charged by plantation shutter retailers. As they cut out the outside labor costs, middle-men fees and manufacturers’ profit margin, they are left with only a few main material costs. Although plantation shutters come in a variety of organic and inorganic materials, the most popular plantation shutter designs are still the traditional wooden ones that were installed in the now historic homes of the American South.

Costs for having plantation shutters installed by a contractor are a bit more predictable. Contractors who have installed plantation shutters before can quickly get accurate measurements and suggest which materials would work best in different rooms. For example, while natural wood may look beautiful in your living room, it might not be so practical in a bathroom where moisture will cause the wood to warp. The size, material, and quality of the shutter will have a significant effect on the cost. Contractors usually go through a shutter supplier and can get various sizes that are not normally available at home improvement stores. Here are some sample prices of the shutters most contractors use for standard-sized windows:

Plantation shutters look like large, wooden blinds, but there are significant differences. Blinds are often narrow, made of aluminum or vinyl, and the slats tilt based on a gear and pulley mechanism. By contrast, plantation shutters have wide compound louvers that fit into a frame and are controlled by way of a wooden rod running up the middle. When not needed, they swing away on hinges in the same way traditional shutters do, except on the inside.

Basswood, which is also known as American basswood, is a common type of wood used to make plantation shutters. This type of timber grows in the central and eastern parts of the United States, and the trees are especially prominent in the Great Lake states. While basswood is technically considered a hardwood, it is one of the softest of woods in this category. The wood is characterized by its creamy hue, a fine texture and ease of finishing. Along with these important features, woodworkers prefer to use basswood to make various projects including plantation shutters because the wood is easy to cut with either power or manual tools.

We have plantation shutters in our new home we built three years ago. I love the way they look and the fact that I don’t have to do anything else to the windows as far as window treatments go. They are a classic, simple style all alone. The problem I’m having is they don’t totally block the light in my bedroom. I can only sleep well in a totally dark room. The situation is complicated by the fact that our bed faces the window. I added light blocking panels that helped with all the small vertical lines of light. The major problem now is the light that comes from the top of the shutters. Does anyone know of a simple solution to block this light? I thought of a cornice board, but then I wouldn’t be able to open the shutters. I don’t open them very often, but if I needed to I couldn’t. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! HELP PLEASE!!!
